Today, Around the Island, I’m checking out this red from Lirac, an appellation (official wine growing region) within the Rhône.

It’s made by Bernard Called at Domaine Coudoulis.

A blend of Grenache, Syrah, Mourvèdre, and Cinsault, man, does it come on strong! At 15% ABV, it ain’t playing, and, as described by the winemaker himself, it’s a “scoundrel” with “country spirit.” Super spicy attack, a big punch of black fruits, then a follow up spice upper cut of black pepper. There are fine tannins, and a lively feel in the mouth.

I would definitely drink this with the bottle chilled down to less than 70 F, otherwise the alcohol would be unpleasant.

I love the story of the winery, how a man decided to change paths entirely and follow his dream to make wine. He also uses no fertilizer, no pesticides, herbicides, and harvests and sorts by hand.

LOOK at those amazing stones! Some Rhône at its finest.

M Callet’s own words on working in the vineyard:

“Being in touch with the elements is a necessity for me. I am first and foremost an Earthman. And being in the middle of the vineyards every morning brings me this privileged contact with nature… with its gifts and whims… ”

Beautiful. Go enjoy this scoundrel of a wine (Pssst, it’s less than $15!)

I’m going to have it with spicy Italian Sausage and pasta, I’ll let you know how that goes.
