In Le Marche in Italy, viticulture can be traced back to 387 b.C. It’s no wonder they are skilled in the vineyard and have such interesting wines.

One of the most important wines, which is also the name of the grape, is Verdicchio. The wines are white and can be made young and fresh, age worthy, spumante (sparkling,) or passito (sweet.) Regardless of style they are always lively with acidity.  Wines must be at least 15% Verdicchio with Trebbiano and Malvasia also allowed for the remainder. 

However, most quality producers use only Verdicchio.

The Bottle

This interesting bottle shape is often associated with Verdicchio. Some think it was inspired by the bottles used in parts of Provence, others say it was directly influenced by the idea of the Etruscan amphora, a clay vessel used to age and store wine from ancient times.


Either way, we can agree that it was in the 1950s that Fazi Battaglia decided to use this bottle shape to make his wines stand out in the market.


Which was great … until the quality of Verdicchio wines began to suffer from over production and corner cutting. Then that bottle became an easy marker for wine to avoid. Not all Verdicchio is bottled in this bottle, and today the bottle shape will tell you nothing about the quality of the wine. 


Luckily in the 1980s, producers starting replanting and updating their methods. They also recommitted to honoring the terroir and using less of the alternate grape varieties allowed.


 Jesi and Matelica, the two main designations:


Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi DOC earned its DOC in 1968 and is the larger in terms of land (3000 ha) and production.

About 145 ha are under the DOCG Riserva designation which stipulate 18 months aging, 6 of which must be in bottle.

There are many sub-zones and a Classico designation. Some municipalities of note are : Staffolo, Cupramontana, Montecarrotto, Castelbellino, and Castelplanio. 

The Jesi region appears like a comb from above, with valleys running toward the Adriatic sea, carrying those cooling breezes inland daily. 


Jesi wines are often thought of as rounder than those of Matelica, but honestly, there is such a difference between the sub zones and producers, you really have to just get in there and start tasting. 





Matelica DOC is the smaller region located in a valley in the foothills of the Apennines in the Western Marche you have a more continental climate, with bigger diurnal shifts in temperature (from day to night.) Its Riserva wines also have DOCG designation like those of Jesi.

This area’s production is 1/10th of Jesi’s.  Vineyards are planted at 400 meters plus elevation. The young wines will be very fresh in flavor with notes of citrus and Hawthorne flowers. The older wines develop almond tones, honeyed acacia, and a satiny texture. 



Since Verdicchio is less known outside of Italy, be careful when purchasing it abroad. Some bottles may not have been stored properly, or the vintages may be past their prime.
